Theft, Larceny & Embezzlement

Theft crimes are criminal acts in which one person takes ownership of another person’s property without permission. A conviction of a theft crime can result in severe consequences for a client. Putting aside the obvious consequences of possible imprisonment or the paying of fines, a conviction for a theft can have serious impacts on a client’s ability to secure future employment. When a client is charged with theft, whether the offense is shoplifting or the theft of thousands of dollars, our office does the necessary research needed to develop a strong defense.

Our clients have been charged with all levels of theft crimes, including:

  • Petty theft
  • Grand theft
  • Possession of stolen property
  • Shoplifting, changing tags on items, or walking out of the store wearing the merchandise
  • Burglary of homes and businesses (first degree and second degree burglary)
  • Robbery
  • Employee theft and embezzlement
  • Forgery

Many of these crimes can be categorized as misdemeanors or felonies. Classification usually depends on the amount or value of the property that is stolen. Although it is always not this simple, usually property that has a value of $400 or less is considered a misdemeanor, and any property that has a value of over $400 is considered a felony.

Whether or not such offenses are charged as misdemeanors or felonies depends on the value of the property allegedly stolen and the prior criminal record of the accused. Some theft crimes, such as shoplifting or stealing small amounts of money from an employer, are so common that many people hardly think of them as criminal offenses. However, the consequences for such common crimes can be significant, especially for a second or third offense.

If you or a loved one has been accused of such a crime, it is imperative that you seek knowledgeable and experienced attorneys.  To contact the Law Offices of Grech & Firetag, please click here.
